Did you know the WHSEA was formed to represent our historic boilers at the National Board?! The camaraderie found here with other steam enthusiasts is just as added bonus!
NBIC Q & A
What does NBIC stand for?
– The National Board Inspection Code. This code was first established in 1945 as a guide for chief inspectors. Over the years, it has become the internationally recognized standard used by most American and Canadian jurisdictions. The NBIC covers inspections, installation and repair and alteration guidelines for pressure vessels ranging from power plant boilers, historic locomotives, and our own historic traction engines.
Who writes this code?
– A committee comprised of industry experts. The NBIC committees meets Bi-annually to update the code. The updates are presented on the Board website for public review in April-May and August-September. Finalized updates are published semi-annually as an addendum.
Why is the NBIC important to us with historic steam operated equipment.
-The NBIC provides rules and requirements for the safe operation and repair of pressure vessels used on our historic steam operated equipment.
– Over the years various unfortunate accidents have given our historic boilers a bad wrap. We know that this these accidents were caused by mistakes that are fixable by following a well written code and great educational opportunities. WHSEA is here to make sure these historic boilers are still around for future generations to enjoy in a safe and hands on way.
Are we involved?
– Yes! The Wisconsin Historic Steam Engine Association has its own representatives who represent us at the Nation Board Meetings, working to make sure historic boilers are included in the code and that inspectors know how to accurately inspect our boilers.
What can I do?
– By becoming a member of WHSEA, you help support this work to preserving the hobby for future generations. Donations and Dues help us get our representatives to NBIC committee meetings and create educational opportunities for safe historic boiler operation. By attending WHSEA meetings, you will be kept up to date on changes and updates being made to the NBIC.
